Additional Courses FAQs

1. Content: What are the new courses, and what can you tell me about them?

The new courses are:

The courses are based on our understanding of the requirements named in recent BRN letters to graduates. Courses are offered to graduates as non-degree-seeking (NDS) students, and eventually, to current learners as space is available). Courses are divided into 15 modules, with built-in flexibility. You can read more in the course syllabi.

2. Eligibility: Who can enroll in these courses?

This course is available to graduates seeking California licensure. Additionally, you must be available to spend 40 hours per week on coursework.

3. Priority: How do you decide who enrolls?

Enrollment is continuous. Enrollment priority will be assigned by graduation cohort and time of enrollment form submission, as space allows.

4. Credentialing: Will I need to become compliant in Complio again?

At this time, you do not need to submit any credentialing requirements unless your background check is over two years old to be eligible to take the course and complete its requirements. If your background check was over two years ago, we will cover the cost of your new background check. Questions? GraduatedLearnersCS@nightingale.edu.

5. Practical/Clinical Requirements: Will I need to travel? Are you offering telehealth?

Currently, we plan for these requirements to be fulfilled by telehealth assignments. They are a type of experiential learning designated as Faculty Supervised Telehealth Experiences (FTSE). You can find information about practical hours in the course syllabi.

6. Telehealth: How are placements assigned? What are the expectations?

The College will assign FTSE placements. They will send your assignments from this email: TelehealthSP@nightingale.edu. Although you will not attend your FTSE assignments in person, you are still expected to behave and dress professionally. These courses are graded, and attendance and punctuality are required.

7. Enrollment: When and how do I enroll?
The form will be open from Friday, Oct. 2 at 8 a.m. MT until Friday, Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. MT. There will be no cost to you to reserve your spot or enroll in these courses. Registrar will contact you to confirm your enrollment, and a faculty member will follow up soon afterward.

8. Length of coursework: How long will the courses take to complete?
The coursework is distributed among 15 modules for each course, but some flexibility is built into the courses, so the time required to complete the coursework will vary for each person.

9. Transcripts: How will the BRN know I’ve completed the coursework?

Graduates will be enrolled in the courses with non-degree seeking status. After you complete the coursework, we will send one additional free transcript to the Board of Nursing. We encourage you to wait until all three courses are completed before requesting that your transcript be sent or sending it yourself.

10. Cost: Will the new courses be free of charge?

Yes, the courses will be free to graduates and current learners. You will not need to pay for tuition, fees, or other costs directly associated with the courses*.

*A charge may appear on your ledger along with a credit that will be applied to your account. This is for accounting purposes, and you will not be responsible to pay. These courses will not be subject to Title IV rules and are not part of the enrollment agreement you signed.

For current learners, the course material will be built into the regular curriculum, so there is no additional cost.

11. Endorsement: Are graduates who obtained their licenses in other states eligible for the new courses?

Yes. Our priority is to provide pathways to help graduates become licensed in California, including graduates who have become licensed in other states.

12. Previous coursework: Do I need to take these courses if I already have hours in obstetrics and pediatrics?

Most likely. That depends on the communication you have received from the BRN. As we understand them, the requirements in the BRN’s letters to most graduates include concurrency of courses, not just number of hours. If you have not received a letter from the BRN concerning your ATT application, we will assume the same concurrency standards will apply to you.

13. Current placements: Can I complete extra hours at my current placement to meet the practical hours component?

No — the required hours need to be completed concurrently with the corresponding theory through additional courses, not added to an existing placement. The hours must be tied to specific courses to meet requirements, and placements must be handled by Schedule Support/IP Placement.

14. Loan repayments: Do you have any information about loan repayment for graduates at risk for default because they are unable to get licensed?

If you have a federal loan, email defaultprevention@nightingale.edu more information. If you have an institutional loan, we will pause collection while your ATT application is being held by the California BRN. For institutional loans contact bursar@nightingale.edu for more information.

15. Legal actions: Are you still pursuing the lawsuit against the BRN?

Yes, legal actions are ongoing. We have filed a request for a preliminary injunction. We do not know the outcome yet, so we cannot tell you how the additional courses will be affected by legal action. Because the BRN makes final licensure determinations for individual applicants, Nightingale cannot guarantee the outcome of any individual application.

Although we disagree with the BRN’s application of these requirements, as a courtesy, we are providing a path for graduates to address the requirements currently being applied by the BRN. We will keep you informed of any developments.
