According to the latest data, the top-paying states for registered nurses are California (average RN wage $133,340), Hawaii ($113,220), and Oregon ($106,610). On the flip side, states like Nevada and Texas strike a favorable balance. Nevada RNs average around $96,300 per year, with a slightly above-average cost of living. Texas RNs earn approximately $84,320 on average, and the State has a low cost of living index (around 93, which is well below the national baseline). This means your nursing salary stretches further in Texas – a big draw for many nurses.

Some regions have higher demand for nurses, which can impact both your job prospects and work environment. For instance, the mountain west and southwest (Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Texas) are projected to see rapid RN employment growth (partly due to population increases and retirements).
